How to Prevent Kidney Stones
What are kidney stones? Kidney stones are hard deposits of minerals that form in the kidneys. They range in size from a grain of sand and some have been found as large as a golf ball. They causes every pain as they pass through our urinary tract.
How do kidney stones develop? Dehydration is one of the main causes. This is because our urine is more concentrated when we are dehydrated. What this means is you have a higher concentration of minerals and salts. Not only that, these minerals and salts end up staying in the kidneys for a longer time period because you aren’t pushing a necessary amount of fluid through the urinary tract. When you combine decreased urine output with higher concentration of minerals and salts they begin to crystalize and form stones in the kidneys.
It’s imperative we stay hydrated for numerous reasons, but in this case it can help you routinely flush the kidneys and dilute the urine to reduce your risk of kidney stones.
It’s also important to mention tea, coffee, soda and alcohol can put you at a higher risk for developing kidney stones. These drinks can directly contribute to higher concentrations of minerals, increase acidity of the urine and dehydrate you.
Recurrent kidney stones lead to damage in our soft tissues of the kidneys and even scarring which diminishes the function of these organs. If someone regularly experiences kidney stones they may have increased risk of developing kidney disease or kidney failure over time.
